Batalha das Termópilas, travada no contexto da
II Guerra Médica, decorreu no Verão de
480 a.C., no desfiladeiro das Termópilas, na
Grécia Central. Ali, de acordo com a tradição
veiculada pelo historiador Heródoto de Halicarnasso,
300 Espartanos, sob o comando do seu rei Leónidas
I, acompanhados por não mais de 7 000 aliados
de outras cidades-Estado helénicas, enfrentaram
milhões de Persas (na verdade, pouco mais de
100.000 homens) liderados por Xerxes, filho de Dario
I.

Why
do we still read and study the Greek and Roman myths,
those stories of gods and heroes from civilizations
long past? There are many possible answers to this question,
but surely one important answer is that these stories
contain, in some sense, truths that are real for all
their embodiment in fictions. Teasing out the nature
of these truths is difficult, but this much is, I think,
supportable: by examining these mythic tales in the
context of the culture that produced them we can come
closer to an understanding of why and in what ways these
myths might retain interest and meaning for us today.

Myth - The Ancient Sources
When
I began to write my history I was inclined to count
these legends as foolishness, but on getting as far
as Arcadia I grew to hold a more thoughtful view of
them, which is this. In the days of old those Greeks
who were considered wise spoke their sayings not straight
out but in riddles, and so the legends about Cronus
I conjectured to be one sort of Greek wisdom. In matters
of divinity, therefore, I shall adopt the received tradition.
