Norte e 22 graus Sul. Os ecossistemas predominantes na maioria das =

tropicais s=E3o as florestas tropicais e as savanas.

<B>17.1 FLORESTA TROPICAL =DAMIDA.</B>=20
<P>A <B>floresta</B><B> tropical pluvial </B>pode ser encontrada em =
extensas=20
=E1reas de terras baixas da Bacia Amaz=F4nica (Am=E9rica do Sul), nas =
=CDndias Orientais=20
e na Bacia do Congo (=C1frica Ocidental). O clima =E9 quente e =FAmido =
durante todo o=20
ano. A precipita=E7=E3o supera os 7 cm mensais e as temperaturas variam =
pouco.=20
Nenhum outro bioma terrestre tem um clima t=E3o uniforme.

<P>Poucos dos muitos aspectos do ecossistema das florestas tropicais =
pluviais=20
est=E3o representados na Figura 17.1. Uma exuberante vegeta=E7=E3o cobre =
a topografia=20
da floresta tropical pluvial. Abaixo das =E1rvores mais altas =
(ab=F3bada) est=E1 o=20
sub-bosque: =E1rvores pequenas adaptadas =E0 sombra. Mais abaixo ainda, =
est=E3o as=20
ervas e sementeiras tolerantes a condi=E7=F5es sombrias. Enroscadas nos =
ramos das=20
=E1rvores se encontram as lianas (trepadeiras tropicais silvestres). Os =
ramos das=20
=E1rvores e as lianas servem como suporte para as plantas ep=EDfitas; =
este tipo de=20
planta cresce aderida =E0s =E1rvores, mas extrai seus nutrientes da =
=E1gua que goteja=20
destas. As ep=EDfitas mais comuns na floresta tropical pluvial s=E3o as =
orqu=EDdeas,=20
brom=E9lias e samambaias. A densa camada de =E1rvores perenes absorvem a =
maior parte=20
da luz, em conseq=FC=EAncia poucas plantas crescem no piso da floresta, =
geralmente=20
livre de vegeta=E7=E3o. Unicamente ao longo dos rios ou nos limites das =
claridades=20
h=E1 uma espessa muralha de vegeta=E7=E3o que se estende at=E9 o piso.=20
<P>A maior parte da produ=E7=E3o florestal contribui para manter uma =
intrincada rede=20
de ra=EDzes e de troncos maci=E7os, que por sua vez sustentam as pesadas =
=E1rvores no=20
solo encharcado. Devido =E0s altas temperaturas e a tantos tipos de =
insetos,=20
fungos e bact=E9rias, as folhas se decomp=F5em t=E3o r=E1pido como caem =
ao piso, por ele=20
se pode observar que em qualquer momento existe unicamente uma fina =
camada de=20
leito vegetal.=20
<P>A vida animal na ab=F3bada =E9 abundante. Entre os moradores das =
copas das=20
=E1rvores est=E3o as serpentes, sapos arbor=EDcolas, lagartos =
arbor=EDcolas, um grande=20
n=FAmero de insetos, p=E1ssaros e mam=EDferos.=20
<P>As florestas tropicais pluviais produzem muitas madeiras de lei, =
valiosas e=20
belas, como o =E9bano, a caoba, o jacarand=E1 e outros. Centenas de =
outros produtos=20
=FAteis ao homem prov=E9m de esp=E9cies da floresta tropical pluvial - =
borrracha,=20
cacau e o curare (um extrato resinoso utilizado como relaxante muscular =
ou para=20
envenenar flechas).
<P>As florestas tropicais pluviais cont=E9m a maior reserva mundial de =
genes,=20
alguns deles muito valiosos, que ainda n=E3o foram utilizados pela =
sociedade=20
humana. O enorme crescimento das popula=E7=F5es humanas nas regi=F5es =
tropicais est=E1=20
causando uma r=E1pida destrui=E7=E3o de suas florestas. A maior parte =
das esp=E9cies da=20
floresta tropical pluvial n=E3o pode viver separadas do complexo que =
integra. Se=20
extinguem quando se destr=F3i seu h=E1bitat. Qual ser=E1 o futuro da =
humanidade se=20
destruirmos a vida que a natureza demorou milh=F5es de anos para =
produzir?=20
<P>As principais categorias de esp=E9cies se apresentam na Figura 17.1, =

<B>17.3 FLORESTAS TROPICAIS DECIDUAIS.</B>=20
<P>Na =CDndia e no Sudeste Asi=E1tico ocorre uma invers=E3o anual dos =
ventos=20
denominado <B>mon=E7=F5es</B>. Se deve ao aquecimento e esfriamento =
peri=F3dico das=20
terras do Tibet. As mon=E7=F5es de ver=E3o levam o ar tropical pluvial =
=E0 =CDndia. No=20
inverno, o vento se inverte e leva ar quente desde as montanhas da =
=C1sia Central=20
onde se encontram as florestas pluviais. Esse ar quente seca as =
florestas, e=20
para a primavera, o ambiente est=E1 quente e ressecado. Animais, como as =

serpentes, se escondem e se inativam at=E9 que os ventos mudem de =
dire=E7=E3o e as=20
chuvas voltem. Como muitas =E1rvores perdem suas folhas na esta=E7=E3o =
seca, o bioma=20
pode descrever-se como uma <B>floresta</B><B> tropical decidual</B> =
(floresta=20
mon=E7=F4nica).=20
<P>As florestas estacionais t=EDpicas est=E3o na =C1sia Meridional; =
florestas=20
semelhantes se encontram na =C1frica e na Am=E9rica do Sul. Formam um =
cintur=E3o,=20
entre a floresta tropical pluvial e a savana. Essas =E1reas t=EAm =
pluviosidade=20
suficiente para suportar as florestas tropicais pluviais, mas possuem =
curtas=20
esta=E7=F5es secas. Muitas das =E1rvores da ab=F3bada perdem suas folhas =
durante a =E9poca=20
seca e por ele mais luz alcan=E7a o n=EDvel da sub-floresta perene.=20
<P>As =E1rvores expostas a mudan=E7as peri=F3dicas, armazenam reservas =

que s=E3o utilizadas para promover o brotamento das folhas. Muitas =

podem resistir =E0 desfolha=E7=E3o (destrui=E7=E3o das folhas) provocado =
por herbicidas.=20
Sua sobreviv=EAncia se observou logo depois do lan=E7amento massivo de =
herbicidas=20
nas florestas tropicais, durante a Guerra de Vietn=E3. Enquanto que os =

perenes n=E3o sobreviveram porque tinham poucas reservas; tiveram que =

partir de brotos.
